The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has released the official notification for the Stenographer Grade ‘C’ and ‘D’ Examination 2026. This open competitive Computer Based Examination will recruit stenographers in various Ministries, Departments, and Organizations of the Government of India.

Reservation & PwBD Suitability

  • Reservation available for SC, ST, OBC, EWS, Ex-servicemen, and PwBD categories.
  • Stenographer posts are suitable for candidates with benchmark disabilities such as Blindness, Low Vision, Deaf/Hard of Hearing, Locomotor Disabilities, Cerebral Palsy, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual Disability, Specific Learning Disability, and Mental Illness, among others.
  • Only male candidates are eligible for Stenographer Grade ‘D’ posts in the Border Roads Organization (BRO).

Eligibility Criteria

Qualification

  • Candidates must have passed 12th Standard (10+2) or equivalent from a recognized Board or University.

Mode of Selection

  • The selection will be through a Computer Based Examination (CBE) followed by a Skill Test in Stenography.
  • Candidates qualifying the CBE will be called for the Skill Test.
  • Final selection will be based on the combined performance in the CBE and Skill Test.

Nationality

Candidates must be:

  • Citizens of India, or
  • Subjects of Nepal/Bhutan, or
  • Persons of Indian origin migrated from select countries intending permanent settlement in India.

Age Limit (as on 01 August 2026)

  • Stenographer Grade ‘C’: 18 to 30 years (Born between 02 August 1996 and 01 August 2008).
  • Stenographer Grade ‘D’: 18 to 27 years (Born between 02 August 1999 and 01 August 2008).

Age Relaxation

  • SC/ST: 5 years
  • OBC: 3 years
  • PwBD (UR/EWS): 10 years
  • PwBD (OBC): 13 years
  • PwBD (SC/ST): 15 years
  • Ex-Servicemen: 3 years after deduction of military service
  • Defence Personnel disabled during hostilities: 3 years (8 years for SC/ST)
  • Central Govt. Civilian Employees (Group C posts): Up to 40 years (45 years for SC/ST)
  • Widows/Divorced Women: Up to 35 years (40 years for SC/ST)

Certification Requirements

  • Candidates seeking reservation or age relaxation must provide valid certificates in prescribed formats.
  • OBC candidates must ensure they are not in the creamy layer.
  • EWS candidates must produce valid Income & Asset certificates for FY 2026-27.
  • PwBD candidates must select the correct category while applying and furnish disability certificates when required.

Scribe Assistance for PwBD Candidates

  • Facility of scribe/assistive technology available for eligible PwBD candidates.
  • Candidates opting for own scribe must ensure Aadhaar authentication and registration of the scribe on SSC’s portal.
